Between 1983 and 1992, Johansson obtained a Master of Science in teaching from both the Stockholm Institute of Education and Lund University. After graduating, she worked as a math, physics, and chemistry teacher.

In the 1988 general elections, Johansson was chosen by the Left Party – Communists to serve in the Riksdag. (VPK). She later left the Republican Party and joined the Social Democrats.

Before Prime Minister Ingvar Carlsson named Johansson Minister for Schools, he worked as a teacher from 1992 to 1994.

She and the then-minister of finance, Erik Sbrink, announced in 1998 that they wanted to “publicly confirm that we are in love” and get a divorce from their respective relationships.

Not long after, Johansson left the government. For the next five years, she was employed in the private sector.

In 2004, Johansson succeeded Lars Engqvist as Minister for Health and Elderly Care, a new cabinet post formed by Prime Minister Göran Persson.

Johansson has a son from her second marriage to Erik Sbrink and two children from her first marriage to Bo Hammar. She is an honorary member of the Swedish football team Hammarby IF.
